Mia lies on the marble floor and gazes at the stars spinning slowly above her. Is it the stars that are spinning or is it the terrace? Her vision is blurring and she feels out of control. Is it the grappa? She only had a couple of glasses. This is why she doesn’t drink. She hears the others talking in the background but can’t distinguish the words. She feels slightly sick. Dinner on the whole was nice, but there was something not quite right about the dish Gianna had prepared for her, a slightly metallic flavour. She can taste it now.

DJ’s face looms out of the haze. ‘My head’s throbbing,’ he says. ‘I’m going up. You coming?’

She flaps her hand.

‘Okay,’ says DJ. ‘See you later.’ His shape disappears.

Voices come and go. They echo as if in some giant building. A cathedral. The cathedral of Castelvecchio. She closes her eyes and the voices recede. She hears one she knows; closer, in her ear, in her head. It’s Alex.

‘Just you and me now,’ he says. She doesn’t respond.

He lies down beside her, on his back like she is. Have the others all gone? She ought to go herself. She doesn’t want to be here alone with Alex. He’s lying very close. She’d like him to move, to leave some space between them. She tries to move herself but she can’t. She feels unwell. Why did she drink so much? She never drinks. She doesn’t even like the stuff. Her eyelids are too heavy to open. Sleep steals over her and she feels herself sinking, sinking, sinking.
